Successes In FOSS Migrations

ctVirtually all public service institutions have implemented at least some open source software. In most cases the software runs at the back end, and is not necessarily visible to the end user. Four government departments have finished readiness assessments which assess a migration approach to be applied in their implementation of FOSS. Six more departments have kickstarted their readiness assessments. Specific applications under development include electronic content management, geographic information systems, website conversion and more.

Most suitable approach recommended by SITA is for the migrating institutions to start with back- end migrations in order to minimise user disruption. It is also advisable to limiting a number of people involved especially when piloting technology.
